Psychiatrist in Rudolph Case Criticized

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – A forensic psychiatrist who developed the government's psychological profile of serial bombing suspect Eric Rudolph is now accused of giving false testimony in the case of a Texas woman. The testimony of Doctor Park Dietz resulted in the overturning of Andrea Yates' conviction Thursday. Yates was accused of drowning her children. Dietz was acting as a government consultant when he helped agents focus on Rudolph as a suspect in the 1998 bombing of a Birmingham abortion clinic. He also helped investigators tie that bombing to several others in Atlanta. But prosecutors have filed papers saying they do not plan to use Dietz as a witness against Rudolph. His trial for the Birmingham bombing is set for this spring. Prosecutors say they did leave the possibility open that Dietz could testify in the penalty phase of the case should Rudolph be convicted of the bombing.
