Montgomery, AL – The state has launched a new program to fight obesity, especially among women. It's called the New Leaf Program and it's organized through the Office of Women's Health in the Alabama Department of Public Health. State health statistics suggest 57 percent of Alabama women are overweight or obese. Seventy-three percent of African American women and 51 percent of white women are considered overweight or obese. The New Leaf Program will begin as a pilot effort this year in Lowndes, Greene and Macon counties. It is set to expand to other counties in the future.
