Saraland Officials Sued

By Alabama Public Radio

Saraland, AL – Fourteen Saraland officials are being sued in federal court. The Fair Housing Agency of Alabama says the officials illegally denied a foster home for ten mentally ill adults. The lawsuit names current and former members of the Saraland City Council and members of the city's Board of Adjustment. In a 2003 letter, the board wrote that it denied the use of the home because the would-be occupants were mental patients. The lawsuit seeks more than one million dollars on behalf of the disabled adults and just under 235-thousand dollars the people who renovated the house.
