Alabama Soldier Killed in Iraq

Cullman, AL – A 22-year-old Marine from Cullman has died in Iraq. Lance Corporal Jonathan Smith died Monday after a roadside bombing near Fallujah. His father, Gary Smith, says family members were notified of his son's death Monday afternoon. Jonathan Smith grew up in Georgia, and moved to Cullman with his family in 1998. Gary Smith says his son decided to join the military after the September 11th terrorist attacks. He enlisted with the Marines after graduating from A-P- Brewer High School in May 2002. Smith was stationed at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina with the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Division, U-S Marine Corps.
