Life Continues After Hurricane Katrina

By Alabama Public Radio

Undated – This week is becoming a time for moving on for many affected by Hurricane Katrina. The state of Alabama saw two casualties from the storm and thousands of evacuees who fled to the state. In total, almost 2,600 people made Alabama their safe haven and many are now making it their temporary if not permanent new home. Twenty-six Red Cross shelters, 32 non-Red Cross shelters, and one medical shelter took in people. Monday, Mobile County, which operates Alabama's largest public school system, reopened all but one school. It was the last system in the state to reopen. More hope lies ahead as remodeled housing at Fort McClellan in Anniston is expected to open Wednesday.
