Alabama Churches Help with Katrina Recovery

Tuscaloosa, AL – This is Alabama Public Radio, I'm Butler Cain.

Churches have played an integral role in helping Hurricane Katrina's victims and evacuees get through one of America's most devastating natural disasters in history. Often it has been the small community churches that have marshaled resources for relief efforts. I recently spoke with pastors from north and west Alabama who say they are proud of how their congregations have responded. I begin with Bill Brown, pastor of Gordo First United Methodist Church in Pickens County.

And in Madison County, Pastor Larry Bishop of First Baptist Church New Hope says his church is helping tap community resources for those in need.

Interview with Larry Bishop

That was Larry Bishop, pastor of First Baptist Church of New Hope in Madison County. We also heard from Bill Brown, pastor of Gordo First United Methodist Church in Pickens County. Both churches, like many others across the state, have been leading community efforts to help those displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

For Alabama Public Radio, I'm Butler Cain.
