Alabama Site Chosen for Possible Nuclear Plant

By Alabama Public Radio

Scottsboro, AL – The Tennessee Valley Authority's Bellefonte facility in Jackson County has been chosen as a potential location for a new type of nuclear power plant. The Nustart Energy Development consortium chose the unfinished facility near Scottsboro and a site in Mississippi for what could be the first nuclear power plant built in the country in more than 30 years. The consortium reports no decision has been made whether to seek a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. But the group is developing an application for advanced approval of the two sites. That would allow for quicker completion if the project is approved.
