King Proposes "No Contest" Legislation

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – That evidence was denied in the capital murder trial of serial killings suspect Jeremy Bryan Jones. Jones had pleaded no contest, in March 1997 in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. Under Alabama law, such a plea in another state can't be used as evidence against a defendant. Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association president Joe Van Heest says prosecutors should stick to allegations in the case that's before the jury. But, he says legislators and government officials might want to ``change the rules'' for high-profile cases like the Jones trial.
