Prison Commissioner Concerned About Crowding

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – State Prisons Commissioner Donal Campbell says the proposed General Fund budget may get him some time in jail. He told the House and Senate budget committees Wednesday there's just enough money to keep things the way they are in the corrections system. And that is overcrowded. Campbell is under a court order to remove state prisoners who are backlogged in county jails. But there's nowhere to put them. Counties have sued the state for not removing inmates from local jails in a timely manner, and a judge is considering whether to hold Campbell in contempt.
