Alabama Teen Receives Carnegie Medal

By Alabama Public Radio

Toney, AL – An Alabama teenager is among 16 people to be honored Thursday with a Carnegie Medal for heroism. On March 20th of last year 16-year-old Jonathan Pique of Toney helped rescue two 15 year old boys from a submerged vehicle. He saved them from drowning after the car they were in crashed into a pond. Pique broke the car's sunroof with a metal bar and pulled out the two. Both survived. The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission meets five times a year to choose heroes who are brought to its attention through newspaper clips or tips on its Web site. Recipients, or their survivors, get a bronze medal and four-thousand dollars.
