AU Raising Saltwater Fish in Black Belt

By Alabama Public Radio

Eutaw, AL – Auburn University is studying the possibility of raising saltwater fish species in ponds in Alabama's Black Belt. There are underground saltwater deposits in that part of the state. Researchers with Auburn's fisheries sciences department are trying to raise flounder, redfish and other saltwater species there. Researcher Ron Phelps says he and his colleagues hope to learn if saltwater species can live in low salinity and if farmers can produce them profitably. Farmers in the area are already growing saltwater shrimp.
