Montgomery AL – A subcommittee of the State Employees Insurance Board voted yesterday for a plan that would increase premiums for state employees insurance. The plan would also require workers receiving single coverage to pay a part of their premium for the first time ever. This, as the state faces skyrocketing health insurance costs. The subcommittee recommended that single active state employees begin paying $5 a month. Family coverage for active employees would rise 10-dollars a month and increase 30-dollars a month for retirees not eligible for Medicare. The premium for single retirees not eligible for Medicare would rise 14-dollars a month. Single retirees on Medicare wouldn't pay anything for their coverage and the premium for family coverage for retirees on Medicare would rise 11-dollars a month. The recommendations will be considered by the State Employees Insurance Board on August 9th.
