Mississippi Fishermen Complain About Alabama Boats

By Alabama Public Radio

Biloxi, MS – Some unemployed Mississippi fishermen are complaining that cleanup jobs in their home waters are going to boats from Alabama. A majority of boats working on post-Katrina cleanup projects this week were from Alabama, not Mississippi. The Coast Guard cleanup contract was issued in July to Matthews Marine of Pass Christian, Mississippi, and Gulf Equipment of Theodore, Alabama. The Matthews Marine project manager says five of the 14 boats working Wednesday were from Mississippi. And seven of 16 boats working Thursday were from Mississippi.
