Montgomery, AL – Alabama taxpayers can wait until April 17th to file their 2006 income tax returns and pay taxes owed. State Revenue Commissioner Tom Surtees announced Tuesday that the state was pushing back its deadline to match the new federal deadline. The Internal Revenue Service announced last week there would be a two-day reprieve for federal returns and payments. That's because April 15th, the usual tax day, falls on Sunday this year and April 16th is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. The I-R-S said holidays in the nation's capital have an impact nationwide. Because of the federal change, Surtees said he signed an order authorizing extra filing and payment time for individual income tax returns, whether filed electronically or on paper.
