Summary of Tuesday's Legislative Action

Montgomery, AL – A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the 14th meeting day of the regular session:

HOUSE
-Approved a resolution apologizing for slavery. Goes to Senate.
-Passed a bill setting up a commission to oversee the Alabama Department of Transportation. Goes to Senate.
-Approved legislation to make it a crime for an adult to use the computer to solicit a person if he or she believes the person is a minor. Goes to Senate.

SENATE
-Approved a resolution expressing "profound regret" for slavery. Goes to House.
-Shut down in stalling tactics by senators upset with the Senate's operating rules.

COMMITTEES
-House Education Appropriations Committee passed a bill that would increase the incentives and tax breaks the state is offering to lure a massive new steel plant to south Alabama. Goes to House.
-Senate Confirmations Committee approved the governor's appointment of four trustees for the University of South Alabama: Andalusia attorney John Peek, Dr. Steven Paul Furr of Jackson, Mobile attorney James Yance, and Dr. Scott Ashley Charlton of Enterprise. Go to Senate.
-Senate Confirmations Committee approved the governor's appointment of American Village founder Tom Walker of Montevallo to the University of Montevallo board. Goes to Senate.

-House Judiciary Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 123 at the Alabama Statehouse to consider several bills aimed at strengthening Alabama's laws against child pornography.
-House Education Appropriations Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 617 to consider an education budget.
-House Constitution and Elections Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 603.
-House Government Operations Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 622.
-House Public Safety Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 602.
-Senate Finance and Taxation-General Fund Committee meets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 to consider a proposed constitutional amendment limiting property tax reappraisals.
-Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 for public hearings on several bills providing tax breaks.
-Senate Education Committee has a public hearing at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Joint Briefing Room on legislation to ban smoking in public places.
-House Committee on County and Municipal Government meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 622.
-House Agriculture and Forestry Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the House chamber.
-House Tourism and Travel Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 123.
-House Education Policy Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 602.
-House Banking and Insurance Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 621.
-House Government Appropriations Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 617.
-House and Senate meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.
