Undated, AL – Fireworks are a traditional part of Fourth of July celebrations, but in dozens of Alabama cities possessing, storing and selling fireworks is illegal.
If you live in an area where fireworks are permitted, Alabama health officials urge you to follow a few simple rules:
- Never allow children under 14 years of age to ignite fireworks.
- Follow all warnings and instructions.
- Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves and flammable materials.
- Keep a bucket or water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
- Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
Officials also remind Alabamians that many fireworks-related burns are not caused by the fireworks directly, but are the result of fires they ignite.
Authorities suggest the safest way to enjoy fireworks is at a community-sanctioned, licensed event.
