Mobile, AL – The city of Mobile is still seeking overdue fines after collecting more than $440,000 during the amnesty period when people with outstanding warrants could settle their cases without additional penalties or jail time.
Mayor Sam Jones said 1,700 outstanding cases were cleared, some because people had died or because city officials couldn't find them.
Jones said the city cleared about 17 percent of its 10,000 outstanding cases and collected about 4 percent of $10 million in overdue fines. But he said the city will probably have about $7 million in outstanding fines once records are cleaned up.
City officials are encouraging those people to come forward although police are now trying to arrest people who face a city warrant.
There will be four special court dates this month for people who haven't cleared their warrants to appear before a municipal judge.
