Alabama Soldiers Return After A Year in Iraq

Undated – After a year in Iraq, soldiers assigned to a National Guard aviation unit are scheduled to return to Alabama this weekend and early next week.

350 members of 1st Battalion, 131st Aviation Regiment will arrive at Fort Benning, Georgia, tomorrow (Saturday) and Tuesday. The unit is assigned Blackhawk helicopters and has companies in Mobile and Montgomery.

According to a Guard spokesman, 185 soldiers are due to arrive at Lawson Army Field tomorrow at approximately 12:15 p.m. Central time. The remaining GI's will arrive at the Army post on Tuesday morning at about 12:15 a.m.

Brief Welcome Home ceremonies are planned for each group.

The unit's primary mission was to transport troops around Iraq. The Regiment flew more than 20 thousand combat hours.
