Hagerstown, MD – Maryland corrections officials say the man who shot and paralyzed Alabama Governor George Wallace is scheduled to be released from prison later this year.
57-year-old Arthur Bremer is incarcerated at the Maryland Correctional Institute-Hagerstown. Case management specialists say Bremer has accumulated enough credits for work and good behavior to be released December 16th, and that date likely will be moved up as he continues to accumulate credits.
Bremer shot Wallace and three bystanders at a presidential campaign stop in Laurel in May 1972. Bremer has served 35 years of a 53-year sentence.
Wallace survived the attack, served two more terms as Alabama's governor and died in 1998.
Wallace's son, George Wallace Junior, told the Press-Register newspaper that he learned about the impending release a couple of weeks ago. He said he and his family have since forgiven Bremer, but he doesn't think his incarceration came close to the suffering and constant paralysis his late father had to put up with.
