Foul Play Suspected in Death of Montgomery Pastor

By Associated Press

Montgomery AL – A Montgomery pastor appears to have died of injuries he received after being run over by his own car, and foul play is suspected, police said.

Alabama State University Police Chief J.H. Young said an officer on routine patrol found the body of the Rev. Paul Boswell, 53, after stopping to check on a parked vehicle about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. The body was underneath the silver Cadillac owned by Boswell and parked in front of an abandoned house.

Boswell had been pastor of Peoples Baptist Church for more than 30 years. The church is located on ASU property. The abandoned house, a block from the church, isn't on ASU property.

Montgomery Police spokesman Huey Thornton said foul play is suspected.

"We do know that foul play exists, and we are looking for a suspect," Thornton said. "However, we do not know the motive of the crime at this time."

He said Boswell, who leaves behind a wife and four children, suffered severe head trauma.

Head deacon Cleave Orum said Wednesday night prayer services at the 350-member church will be held as planned.

An assistant pastor will conduct Sunday services.
