Greensboro, AL – The Reverend Al Sharpton joined a rally Sunday in support of a former Greensboro City Council member and another woman accused of voter fraud in Hale County.
The New York minister drew cheers at the Salem Baptist Church when he defended Rosie Lyles and Valada Paige-Banks, who were indicted by a Hale County grand jury in mid August on multiple charges of voter fraud.
Some in the crowd wore ''Greensboro 2'' T-shirts.
Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Charles Steele of Tuscaloosa and Democratic state Senator Bobby Singleton of Greensboro, also participated.
Banks, also known as Valada Undra Paige, had been on the City Council and served as mayor pro tem until her conviction in December for the first-degree theft of more than $8,700 in food stamp benefits.
