Montgomery, AL – Governor Riley says he won't call a special session of the Legislature this fall. The Republican governor says he couldn't get an agreement with Democratic legislators to pass ethics and property tax reappraisal legislation.
Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little calls it ''a wise move.'' He says there's no emergency on ethics or property tax legislation that would warrant a special session.
Little and other Democratic legislative leaders had told the Republican governor the issues could wait until the Legislature's next regular session begins in February.
Riley says he had looked at a special session as a way to address bills that had been endorsed by himself and by Republican and Democratic legislative caucuses in last year's election. That included a ban on PAC-to-PAC transfers and on ending annual property tax reappraisals. But he says he couldn't get an agreement.
Riley had also talked about including legislation to address rising homeowners insurance rates on the Alabama coast. But that issue was not worked out either.
