Hoover, AL – Hoover's City Council president is calling for a quick response from the city school board to the investigative report on Hoover High School.
City Council President Gary Ivey says the board must act quickly on any recommendation to punish or clear employees named in the probe of improprieties at Hoover High, or to resign if they are unable to do so.
The school board has a meeting set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Also, the Alabama High School Athletic Association has been in contact with Hoover High officials. No details about what they are talking about is being released a this time.
Ivey urges school board members to direct Superintendent Andy Craig to immediately recommend disciplining some employees and exonerating all the others or to recommend announcing that all the employees are exonerated and no action will be taken.
Among other things, the report describes changed grades for football players, preferential treatment of football players and pressure on teachers to make sure football players received certain grades.
It also noted a lack of public accountability in the finances of football camps and broadcasts and that Coach Rush Propst has been providing income for a second family in the Pell City area and is given use of a Nissan Titan by Crown Pontiac-Nissan.
School board member A.W. Bolt says he has no problem with the City Council pressuring the board to make a decision, adding he wants a recommendation soon, too.
School board Vice President Suzy Baker says the Alabama Education Association is tying the school district's hands in how it can discipline employees cited in the report.
