Tuscumbia, AL – $100,000 in federal funds will be used for renovation work at Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller.
Alabama Democratic Congressman Bud Cramer said an agreement was reached by the House and Senate to use the appropriation in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development budget for work at the north Alabama tourist attraction.
Cramer said Ivy Green, where the deaf and mute Keller learned to speak and read as a child, needs to be preserved for future generations.
Sue Pilkilton, director of the home, said officials are looking into repairing the kitchen and four chimneys as well as giving the home a new roof.
The Congressional agreement comes on the heels of a $275,000 state appropriation.
