Company May Pick Decatur to Build Military Vehicle

Decatur – A defense contractor based in Huntsville is zeroing in on Decatur as the possible site for a new manufacturing plant.

Vanguard Global Security has selected the Mallard-Fox Creek Industrial Park and Port as a prime location to build a remote aircraft called the Peregrine.

The unmanned aerial vehicle is being designed for the military, which already uses hundreds of similar aircraft in Iraq and elsewhere.

Vanguard wants to break ground within six months on a plant. Chief executive officer Craig Whitlock says Vanguard is focusing most of its attention on Decatur, but it's also researching other areas.

The Decatur site would be good in part because Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal is home to the Army program manager for unmanned aerial vehicles. The plant would employ about 90 people by 2011.
