Montgomery – Some booklets sent to taxpayers by the Alabama Department of Revenue contain an error in the table used to determine standard deductions and should not be used in tax preparation.
Acting Revenue Commissioner Cynthia Underwood said this week taxpayers who were mailed the incorrect information will be notified and receive the corrected standard reduction table.
The corrected table will reflect changes made in Alabama law in 2006 that changed standard deduction amounts for taxpayers with adjusted gross income up to $30,000 a year.
The correct information is also available on the department's Web site.
Underwood said online tax preparation programs contain the correct information, but that taxpayers that buy tax preparation programs "off the shelf" should download updates from the software vendor's Web site.
