Accused Confederate Monument Vandals to be Tried as Juveniles

Montgomery – The Montgomery County District Attorney's office says three Montgomery teenagers who are accused of vandalizing the Confederate Monument on the state Capitol grounds will be tried as juveniles.

State Capitol Police charged each 17-year-olds with first-degree criminal mischief, a felony. Officers discovered the vandalism on November 11th.

The juveniles are scheduled to make their first court appearance February 17th.

Leonard Wilson, state commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, told the Advertiser newspaper he disagrees with the decision and believes the trio should be tried as adults.

A historic preservation expert from Bessemer is working to remove the black paint from the monument.
