Birmingham – An initial glance at the drought conditions gripping the Southeast might look like they have not changed much in recent weeks. But conditions are shifting a bit.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor Survey, released today, approximately 20 percent of the Southeast remain under D-4 or exceptional drought conditions. That's about two percent less than the week before.
Alabama's status is unchanged since Christmas. 39 percent of the state remains under D-4 classification. The lesser drought conditions have shifted to include just less than one percent more of south Alabama.
According to the Survey, 16 percent of Georgia is under D-4, which is unchanged from last week. Exceptional drought exists in 19 percent of South Carolina and there are signs of things getting worse in that state. 46 percent of North Carolina is plagued by D-4 conditions, but that's five percent less than last week. And, 18 percent of Tennessee is still rated under exceptional drought. Virginia is no longer under a drought.
