Washington, DC – Republicans in Alabama's congressional delegation are still coming to terms with the prospect of Sen. John McCain heading up the party's ballot this November.
Of course they'll vote for McCain over the Democratic candidate, they said in interviews with The Associated Press last week as the Arizona senator strengthened his grip on the GOP nomination.
But many openly discussed their lack of enthusiasm for McCain and said conservative voters may feel the same way.
Rep. Mike Rogers of Saks, who co-chaired Mitt Romney's Alabama campaign before the former Massachusetts governor dropped out of the race, says it's taking him a little while to warm up to McCain.
Rogers adds: ''I think as much as anything there will be an anti-Hillary Clinton vote or anti-Barack Obama vote than a pro-John McCain vote.''
Sen. Jeff Sessions of Mobile, who feuded with McCain in an emotional battle over immigration last year, says he senses concern, citing his contacts with people who are ''a little worried, a little uneasy'' about McCain.
Rep. Spencer Bachus of Vestavia Hills was alone among Alabama's five House Republicans to officially endorse McCain early on.
