Montgomery-Based Army Reserve Unit to Head to Iraq

Montgomery – An Army Reserve unit based in Alabama is set to ship out to Iraq in the spring. About 120 members of the Montgomery-based 926th Engineer Brigade is scheduled to leave Sunday for about two months of training at Camp Shelby in Mississippi.

In Iraq, the unit will direct the activities of some engineering units. That's the same mission it had in 2003 when it was based in northern Iraq.

Major Bill Reeves, a unit spokesman, told The Birmingham News about 70 percent of the 120 unit members who are set to deploy have been to Iraq before. About 40 percent of the soldiers are from Alabama.

In 2003, the 926th was attached to the 101st Airborne Division, which was then under the command of General David Petraeus. Petraeus is now the chief American commander in Iraq.
