Montgomery, AL – An Alabama House committee has agreed to let voters decide if they want to call a convention to write a new state constitution.
The House Constitution and Elections Committee voted 9-4 Wednesday for a bill that sets up a statewide referendum at the same time as primary elections in 2010. If voters decide they want a constitutional convention, they would vote again in November 2010 to elect 210 delegates to the convention.
If the bill passes the Legislature, voters would return to the polls again in 2012 to ratify or reject the proposed new constitution.
