Four Senators Excused From Testifying In Two-Year College Probe

Montgomery, AL – An attorney for four influential state senators says they have been excused from subpoenas requiring them to appear before a federal grand jury investigating corruption in Alabama's two-year college system.

Mobile attorney Michel Nicrosi said the U.S. attorney's staff in Birmingham told her Wednesday that state Sens. Hinton Mitchem, Lowell Barron, Bobby Denton and Rodger Smitherman will not be called before the grand jury this week.

Nicrosi said she could not comment further about her conversation. A phone message seeking comment from the U.S. attorney's office was not immediately returned.
