Montgomery, AL – A new report shows that on an average night in Alabama there are 5,391 homeless people on the streets or in shelters.
The report by the Governor's Statewide Interagency Council on Homelessness is the first statewide survey of homelessness in Alabama. The report was presented Tuesday to Gov. Bob Riley and to Philip Mangano, director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.
Mangano is known as the homeless czar for the Bush administration.
The report shows that 2,177 of the homeless are substance abusers, 1,077 are in families with dependent children and 1,494 are severely mentally ill.
