Toomer's Corner Famed Trees Get Help

By Associated Press

Auburn AL – The two landmark live oaks at Toomer's Corner, a rallying site for Auburn University football victory parties and other celebrations, have been given a $5,000 spruce up by tree experts.

Daniel Bauer of Tucker, Ga.-based Bartlett's Tree Experts says the oaks are 80 to 100 years old. Students have a tradition of "rolling them" with toilet paper during parties. Bauer says water from fire hoses cleaning out the paper have damaged the trees, but they may live another century or longer.

The trees were pruned and fertilized. Workers removed bricks from the sidewalk to gain access to the roots and performed a root invigoration process.

Cathy Love of AU Campus Planning and Space Management says the one-day treatment cost about $5,000. It may take a year to see results.
