Cockfighting Raid In Marshall County

By Associated Press

Guntersville AL – A raid on an alleged cockfighting ring in Marshall County led to 23 arrests. Sheriff Scott Walls said his department had busted cockfighting operations before but none like this one. He said it was a well-organized operation that authorities believe has been going on for years.

The cockfight was held in the Mount Hebron area near the Etowah County line Saturday night. Twenty-six officers raided the cockfights and found an estimated 350 people -- including women and children.

The ring included fluorescent lights, bleachers and concession stands.

Walls said it was a winner-take-all event with the pot possibly as high as $10,000.
