Incumbent Republican Worries About Negative Campaign

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The Republican runoff for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District seat has been notable for its stinging campaign ads.

It got so testy that incumbent Republican Terry Everett and GOP leaders urged the two candidates -- Jay Love of Montgomery and Harri Ann Smith of Slocomb -- to pull the negative radio and TV spots.

GOP officials were worried that the noisy infighting prior to Tuesday's vote may help Democrats pick up a once-safe GOP seat in the fall.

The other GOP congressional runoff Tuesday has been low key. Huntsville insurance executive Wayne Parker and Huntsville lawyer Cheryl Baswell Guthrie are seeking the 5th District seat in north Alabama.
