Low Turnout Forecast For Ala. Primary

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's chief election official is expecting very low turnout for the runoff election Tuesday.

Secretary of State Beth Chapman is predicting about 9 percent turnout. But she says she wouldn't be surprised if turnout fell below that amount.

Chapman is forecasting low turnout because there are no Democratic runoffs for statewide or congressional offices. The Republican Party has runoffs for two statewide offices and two congressional offices. Chapman says the races in the 2nd and 5th Congressional Districts will drive turnout.

Alabama's runoff two years ago had 8.2 percent turnout.
