Riley Promotes Pre-K Program

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – Governor Bob Riley is visiting new pre-kindergarten classrooms in Birmingham.

Riley will on Tuesday be at the Harris Early Learning Center in downtown Birmingham to show off the state's expanded program for four-year-olds.

The governor announced plans last year to expand the voluntary pre-K program. The Legislature doubled funding for the program to $20 million for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. The funding will allow an additional 1,800 children across the state to participate.

The governor will tour the pre-kindergarten classrooms at 2 p.m. with the director of the state Office of School Readiness, Marquita Davis.
