Potatoes To Blame For Rise In Food Prices

Montgomery, AL – Food prices are higher this month, according to the Alabama Farmer's Federation. The average cost of 20 basic market basket items costs $52.86, or about 33 cents more from July's survey.

The federation said higher prices for red potatoes grown in western states were mostly to blame. The normally low cost food staple was up 14 cents a pound in August.

Tomatoes, lettuce and sweet potatoes lead the list of bargain items in the produce isle.

Overall, beef, poultry and dairy prices were mixed.

Regional reports showed the market basket was highest in south Alabama at $55.15. It was lowest in the northeast corner of the state at $51.30.

The statewide survey was conducted the week of August 1-10.
