Traffic Heavy but Manageable in Alabama

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Transportation said the number of cars traveling across state lines to escape Hurricane Gustav is high but manageable.

Tony Harris said Monday that traffic on Alabama's highways had grown from moderate Sunday morning to heavy by late afternoon.

But he said the number was still below the 4,000 vehicles Alabama's highways can accommodate per hour.

Harris said about 70 buses carrying about 4,000 evacuees from Louisiana came across state lines on Sunday, taking people to various shelters.

He said transportation officials were watching traffic closely to see if lane reversals would be necessary, but it didn't come to that.
