Ala. Cutting Subsidized Child Care For Workers

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Department of Human Resources has made one cut in the subsidized child care for low-income working families and is planning more.

The department has eliminated the deduction that families received for having multiple children in the program. Next up - at a date still to be determined - is an increase of $3 per week in the copay and new limits on the income that families can have to participate in the program.

A department spokesman says the changes are the result of budget constraints.

The executive director of the Federation of Child Care Centers of Alabama, Sophia Bracy Harris, says the changes will hurt low-income working families by offsetting the recent increase in the minimum wage.
