Birmingham, AL – Birmingham-area attorneys will offer free legal advice each week at homeless shelters in Birmingham, starting Nov. 5.
Attorney Lisa Borden said the Homeless Experience Legal Protection program will host Birmingham clinics at the Old Firehouse Shelter and First Light shelter for women every Wednesday.
The program started in New Orleans in 2004.
Borden handles pro bono cases for Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC and said HELP's founder, U.S. District Court Judge Jay Zainey, contacted her firm about efforts to launch the program in other cities.
She said the program is offered in about 15 cities.
Volunteers from nine law firms and students from the Cumberland School of Law will assist at the downtown shelters.
