Slow Housing Market Effects Birmingham Pipe Company

Birmingham, AL – A Birmingham pipe company is laying off dozens of employees because the slow housing market is cutting into demand.

American Cast Iron Pipe Co. said it will cut 58 hourly jobs on Nov. 10. The layoffs amount to 2.5 percent of the company's workforce of 2,200 people.

The copy produces iron pipe and fittings typically used as water and sewer lines. Demand is down because fewer homes are being constructed.

American Cast Iron Pipe last laid off workers about 11 years ago.
