Huntsville Welcomes Explosives Center

Huntsville. AL – Huntsville is being billed as the future ``explosives capital of the world'' when construction of a new explosives training and research center opens in 2010.

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, who helped secure federal money for the project, gave it that description as groundbreaking for the center was held Thursday at Redstone Arsenal.

The National Center for Explosives Training and Research will include explosive ranges, a lab, classrooms, conference facilities and office space.

Shelby said the Department of Justice's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives will lead research at the center. He said it will provide ``one-stope training'' for federal, state and local law enforcement.
