Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has visited a fifth-grade class with an Alabama Army National Guard soldier as part of the state's efforts to honor the country's veterans.
Riley and Lt. Col. Leah Compton, who served in Iraq for a year with the Prattville-based 231st Military Police Battalion, visited MacMillan International Academy in Montgomery on Monday.
Compton, who told students about her experiences in Iraq, is also the director of the Military Duty Management Branch at the State Military Department. Both spoke about the importance of remembering veterans.
Riley then returned to the Capitol where signed a proclamation officially declaring Nov. 11 as Veterans Day in Alabama. The proclamation notes that there are more than 447,000 veterans living in the state.
