Residents Upset About Weed Control Decision

By Associated Press

Guntersville, AL – Residents in a north Alabama city are protesting a decision by the Tennessee Valley Authority to reduce its weed-control program on Lake Guntersville.

TVA plans to quit treating the lake at Guntersville and Tennessee's Lake Nickajack except for public access areas beginning next year. Officials said Monday the move will save about $800,0000, and it will be fairer for ratepayers.

But residents and elected officials in Guntersville fear the huge lake will be overgrown with weeds. They say it could hurt development and tourism.

The TVA said it quit treating aquatic weeds on the rest of its reservoirs in the 1990s.
