Gadsden, AL – Most Northeast Alabama farmers had better crop yields this year despite below-average rainfall.
David Derrick, regional extension agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, attributed the higher yields to improved drought conditions compared to last year.
A fedearl agriculture report Monday showed the state's average yield for cotton is 842 pounds an acre, up from last year's 733 pounds. The state's average soybean yield is 31 bushels an acre, up from last year's 21 bushels an acre. Corn yields are 92 bushels an acre, up from last year's 79 bushels an acre average.
Derrick said yields were ``surprisingly good'' for cotton. He said corn and soybean yields were about as expected.
