By Associated Press

Montevallo, AL – Construction has begun on the first phase of the 479-acre Alabama National Cemetery of Alabama 119.

The director of the veterans cemetery, Quincy Whitehead, said the first burials are scheduled for next spring.

Whitehead said the first phase of the project includes space for a thousand caskets and cremation sites, plus a temporary building on 12 acres.

Whitehead said the second phase is scheduled to begin next and will include the construction of permanent buildings, landscaping, irrigation work, a memorial walkway and a flag assembly.

Any honorably discharged veteran is entitled to a burial plot at the cemetery.
