Montgomery, AL – Only a small percentage of the 2.1 million votes cast in Alabama in the Nov. 4 presidential election were from military service members overseas.
A report the secretary of state's office submitted to the U.S. Justice Department shows that 5,743 votes were cast by absentee ballots from Alabama citizens living overseas. That represents less than one-half of one percent of the votes cast Nov. 4 in Alabama.
Secretary of State Beth Chapman said Tuesday the Defense Department has estimated there are about 100,000 Alabama residents living overseas. She says it concerns her that so few of those citizens voted.
She said she feels some of them may have tried to vote, but couldn't get their ballots in on time.
