Birmingham, AL – A Southern Christian Leadership Conference official says Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford received inequitable treatment when he was arrested for bribery and other charges.
Langford was arrested at his office at Birmingham Budweiser Monday morning. He was placed in leg irons and kept in a holding cell at the federal courthouse until his initial court appearance later that day.
The president of the Birmingham and Alabama chapters of the SCLC, Calvin Woods, said Wednesday that treatment is different from the way fellow defendants Bill Blount and Al LaPierre were handled. LaPierre and Blount both drove themselves to the courthouse and turned themselves in.
U.S. Attorney Alice Martin says LaPierre and Blount volunteered to surrender after hearing media reports of Langford's arrest.
